Building and expanding On-Site Employee Health Clinics has become an imperative in enabling employers to offer competitive benefits, control costs, and provide quality healthcare to employees. Moreover, employers must redefine their corporate healthcare strategy, and innovation will be key to success!

The opportunities and challenges facing on-site clinics have drastically changed over the past year. Healthcare reform has made its way to center stage on all matters related to healthcare, and on-site employee health clinics are no exception. Conference Workshop Sessions

Workshop Session A:
Thursday, July 19, 2012 5:45 p.m. – 7:45 p.m..

Applying a Break-Even Analysis Approach to Determine the Financial Feasibility of a New and/or Expanding On-Site Employee Health Clinic

More employers are establishing new and/or expanded on-site health clinics to enhance their employee health and corporate cost-management strategies. Naturally, they want to know when their efforts will “break-even.” To do so, it’s important to factor in real costs and anticipated benefits into a viable measurement protocol in order to objectively determine if, and when, their efforts will [presumably] pay-off.

This workshop will highlight a step-by-step process on how to design and apply a customized BEA framework within a new and/or expanded on-site clinic operation. The presenter will address basic questions such as: What is a BEA? Why is a BEA used? Where is a BEA used? How is a BEA used? When is a BEA used? And, with whom is a BEA used? In addition, an actual BEA framework used in a real worksite clinic setting will be highlighted.

Key workshop takeaways include:

• Distinguishing between a BEA vs. a cost-benefit analysis and ROI

• Acknowledging key partnerships to consider across the benefits/HR/medical/wellness spectrum in order to secure essential data

• Identifying tangible cost [expense] items relevant to a particular clinic operation

• Establishing relevant outcome measures [metrics] that can be used as “benefits” in the BEA calculation

• Acquiring a fundamental understanding of how to design a basic BEA framework around a particular on-site clinic operation

David Chenoweth, PhD, FAWHP is President of Chenoweth & Associates, Inc., an international health and productivity data analysis and econometrics firm. For the past 31 years, he has conducted econometric evaluations of on-site employee health clinics in various business, industrial, and healthcare organizations. He has developed corporate health risk assessment and evaluation tools for organizations in Europe, Scandinavia, and the United States. Some of his work has been published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine and the American Journal of Occupational Health Nursing.

David has written nine books on topics ranging from health care cost management strategies for employers –to- evaluating worksite health promotion programs and served several years as a monthly columnist for the trade publication, Occupational Health & Safety. He is a fellow of the Institute for Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University and the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion, and professor emeritus at East Carolina University.

Workshop Session B:
Friday, July 20, 2012 12:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.

Optimizing Design, Workflow and Customer Service at an On-Site Health Clinic to Maximize Employee Engagement and Outcomes

The success of an on-site clinic lies in its ability to engage employees and build a strong relationship between on-site providers and their patients. Yet, a clinic does not need to cost a fortune or be extravagant to succeed. Instead, successful on-site clinics leverage smart design, unique workflow and focus on customer service to set them apart and engage their patients.

This workshop will help participants avoid common errors when implementing an on-site clinic and maximize investment via design, workflow and customer service.

At the end of this workshop, participants are expected to learn the following:

• Understand errors commonly made by employers when implementing a clinic

• Learn to maximize their capital investment through innovative design and unique workflow

• Rely on unique workflow and customer service to set themselves apart from local alternatives, drive patient engagement and minimize the need for heavy incentives

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER:
Kayur Patel, MD, FACP, FACPE is the Chairman of Wellness for Life Medical, LLC, which operates workplace medical centers with a focus on keeping employees and their families healthy and out of the hospital, helping employees become better health consumers, and saving employers’ money by reinventing how they pay for their employees’ healthcare. Dr. Patel’s forte is in aligning employers, on-site providers and patients to build a strong relationship for successfully converting the challenges into opportunities for patients, providers and employers.

Dr. Kayur Patel also serves as the Director of Health Care Excel, a Quality Improvement Organization for Indiana. A practicing physician, Dr. Patel keeps speaking engagements nationally, educating the hospital executive boards, “C” suites, physicians, nursing staff and other hospital personnel to meet the quality agenda and educating the audiences on the principles of healthcare reform and its progress. Previously, Dr. Patel was the Chief Medical Officer of Terre Haute Regional Hospital, which is a HCA Facility.
