Workshop Session A:
Thursday, July 19, 2012 • 5:45 p.m. – 7:45 p.m..Applying a Break-Even Analysis Approach to Determine the Financial Feasibility of a New and/or Expanding On-Site Employee Health Clinic
More employers are establishing new and/or expanded on-site health clinics to enhance their employee health and corporate cost-management strategies. Naturally, they want to know when their efforts will “break-even.” To do so, it’s important to factor in real costs and anticipated benefits into a viable measurement protocol in order to objectively determine if, and when, their efforts will [presumably] pay-off.
This workshop will highlight a step-by-step process on how to design and apply a customized BEA framework within a new and/or expanded on-site clinic operation. The presenter will address basic questions such as: What is a BEA? Why is a BEA used? Where is a BEA used? How is a BEA used? When is a BEA used? And, with whom is a BEA used? In addition, an actual BEA framework used in a real worksite clinic setting will be highlighted.
Key workshop takeaways include:
• Distinguishing between a BEA vs. a cost-benefit analysis and ROI
• Acknowledging key partnerships to consider across the benefits/HR/medical/wellness spectrum in order to secure essential data
• Identifying tangible cost [expense] items relevant to a particular clinic operation
• Establishing relevant outcome measures [metrics] that can be used as “benefits” in the BEA calculation
• Acquiring a fundamental understanding of how to design a basic BEA framework around a particular on-site clinic operation

Some of his work has been published in the Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine and the American Journal of Occupational Health Nursing.David has written nine books on topics ranging from health care cost management strategies for employers –to- evaluating worksite health promotion programs and served several years as a monthly columnist for the trade publication, Occupational Health & Safety. He is a fellow of the Institute for Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University and the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion, and professor emeritus at East Carolina University.
Workshop Session B:
Friday, July 20, 2012 • 12:45 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.Optimizing Design, Workflow and Customer Service at an On-Site Health Clinic to Maximize Employee Engagement and Outcomes
The success of an on-site clinic lies in its ability to engage employees and build a strong relationship between on-site providers and their patients. Yet, a clinic does not need to cost a fortune or be extravagant to succeed. Instead, successful on-site clinics leverage smart design, unique workflow and focus on customer service to set them apart and engage their patients.
This workshop will help participants avoid common errors when implementing an on-site clinic and maximize investment via design, workflow and customer service.
At the end of this workshop, participants are expected to learn the following:
• Understand errors commonly made by employers when implementing a clinic
• Learn to maximize their capital investment through innovative design and unique workflow
• Rely on unique workflow and customer service to set themselves apart from local alternatives, drive patient engagement and minimize the need for heavy incentives
